He earned his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan (1997). His research focuses on the Umayyad period, with special attention to developments in Islamic law and theology during that time. He is the author of two monographs, <em>Religious Scholars and the Umayyads: Piety-Minded Supporters of the Marw\u0101nid Caliphate<\/em> (Routledge, 2013) and <em>Abd al-Rah\u0323m\u0101n b. \u2018Amr al-Awz\u0101\u2018\u012b<\/em>, (Oneworld, 2019) and co-editor, with Jens Scheiner, of\u00a0<em>New Perspectives on Ibn \u02bfAs\u0101kir in Islamic Historiography<\/em>\u00a0(Leiden, 2017).
