Gianluca Parolin works at the intersection of law, language, and culture in Muslim contexts, with a particular obsession for how big ideas—like sharia, citizenship, and the state—are translated into everyday life, whether through constitutional texts or courtroom dramas. His current projects range from vernacular constitutionalism in the late Ottoman world to the visual jurisprudence of Egyptian crime television (yes, really).
He is Professor of Law at the Aga Khan University in London, where he has led the Governance Programme since its inception over a decade ago. In this role, he has convened international conferences, collaborative workshops with local policymakers, and produced public-facing content across the Global South—from Nairobi to Beirut to Northern Pakistan.
Gianluca joined ISILS at its IX conference, hosted the X in London (for which he co-launched the Shar3i, The Podcast as an excuse to talk to clever people), and was elected Secretary at the XI conference—still unsure how that happened, but honoured to serve.
